NAWDO press statement – Persistent Organic Pollutants in waste upholstered domestic seating
Friday 6th January 2023
[Start]
NAWDO members are working hard to put in place arrangements to divert waste upholstered domestic seating from landfill and into energy recovery, to ensure that any POPs are irreversibly destroyed.
The specific guidance related to waste upholstered domestic seating was published by the Environment Agency just before Christmas and this has left local authorities with a limited amount of time to prepare and put arrangements in place. Each local authority will be working with its contractors and other stakeholders to determine how to adjust operations to meet the requirements set out in the legislation.
The cost of compliance is potentially significant, with some prices exceeding £200 per tonne for managing this waste stream due to the new requirements set out by the Environment Agency.
NAWDO is continuing to engage with waste contractors, the Environment Agency and DEFRA to ensure that all local authorities can achieve compliance with the legislation as soon as is practicably possible.
